Overview/Purpose:

The Category Advisor position will be focused on Tea category for Walmart. The Category Advisor guides the vision for the category along with the retailer and is responsible for developing category insights to build winning strategies and assortment recommendations.  The position requires market awareness within brick and mortar primarily, but candidates should also be knowledgeable with Ecommerce.  The key pillars for the Category Advisor position are Category Strategy, Sales & Shopper Analysis, Ad hoc Projects, and Modular Planning/Drawing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops category growth initiatives that drive sales and market share growth.
  • Establish relationships with the customer to understand priorities and strategies to deliver winning approaches and be recognized as a strategic partner.
  • Provide both customer and industry specific data insights to drive strategic conversations and decision making.
  • Mine and analyze Luminate shopper data to uncover insights that will help drive category growth and increased customer engagement.
  • Offer Walmart advice that is objective, accurate, factual, and designed to be in Walmart’s best interests to grow the category as a whole.
  • Lead annual category review process understanding category trends while making appropriate recommendations to the assortment.
  • Provide unbiased strategic and tactical insights and recommendations to the Walmart Merchant Team on distribution, shelving, merchandising, retail strategy (technically item specific pricing is prohibited), and promotional opportunities to improve category performance.
  • Must be on the leading edge for the retailer by utilizing and translating consumer, shopper and analytic insights, processes and tools turning results into strategies and meaningful opportunities.
  • Leverage data from multiple resources and analyze comprehensive metrics to identify competitive trends, unbiased tactical insights, and discover new business opportunities for growth and focus within the category.
  • Must possess a high level of confidentiality, integrity, flexibility, time management, and the ability to multi-task.
  • Initiate and conduct analyses for both ad-hoc and periodic data reporting and present data in a way that is readily understood and highly relevant for decision making.
  • Must provide superior support to buyers and cross-functional teams (as we work with areas which technically fall outside of merchandising – planning, replenishment, mod development) during the standard Walmart modular relay schedule:  managing modular drawings, budget planning, new item strategies, exit/markdown strategies and coordination with Walmart Merchandising and Walmart Modular Planning teams.  Duties also include working at the Walmart layout center building modulars, defining SOTC strategies and opportunities from a modular perspective and building trait scripts on an annual or as needed basis.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum 5 years in customer insights, category insights, retail industry
  • Strong analytical and technical skills pertaining to extracting, manipulating, and analyzing internal and third-party data
  • 1-2 years’ experience with Shopper Loyalty Card data (i.e., Luminate, dunnhumby)
  • Experience syndicated data tools (i.e., IRI, Spins)
  • In depth understanding of Retail Link
  • Proficient in Space Planning Plus
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Power BI
  • Experience with brick and mortar and Ecommerce strategy, business processes, and goals
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and analytical skills to identify trends from multiple sources and translate into compelling storytelling
  • Competent in communication, strong functional/technical skills, and the ability to manage a multi-tasking environment
