Stockton University announces a national search for a visionary, collaborative and forward-thinking leader to serve as the new Dean for the School of Education. Stockton is well-known for its holistic approach to student well-being and educational success, with much of that care delivered through direct faculty interaction and experiential learning. The School provides students a unique opportunity to learn from expert faculty in educational settings that include collaborations with undergraduate liberal arts programs, close partnerships with school districts, a regional 80-member in-service consortium, the Southern Regional Institute and Educational Technology Training Center (SRI & ETTC) and several online and hybrid graduate degree-granting programs. Stockton University, with locations in Galloway, Atlantic City, Hammonton, Manahawkin, and Woodbine, New Jersey, is a comprehensive public university with a strong dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The School offers pre-service teacher certification in collaboration with undergraduate degree programs in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Historical Studies, Languages and Culture Studies, Liberal Arts, Literature, Marine Science, Math, Physics, Political Science, Psychology and Studies in the Arts (Music and Visual Arts). In addition, the School offers a post-baccalaureate BA in Teacher Education, BA in Education and Human Development, Master of Arts in Education including graduate level endorsements (ESL/Bilingual, LDT/C, Reading Specialist, Special Education, NJ Supervisor & Principal), Master of Arts in Instructional Technology, and an Education Doctorate in Organizational Leadership. Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Education is expected to provide leadership and vision; foster high-quality academic programs; prioritize student academic success; develop and support faculty and staff; provide direction and leadership for academic programs; establish new relationships and enhance existing partnerships with community stakeholders; increase enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs; oversee the operation of the SRI & ETTC in a manner that strengthens its fiscal health and integrates with University educational and extracurricular activities; diversify revenue through programming, continuing education, community partnerships, grants, and fundraising opportunities; and, effectively manage the School’s fiscal and physical resources. Additionally, the School prepares pre-service and in-service educators for licensure, which requires continuous national accreditation (Association for Advancing Quality in Teacher Preparation, AAQEP) and compliance with state and federal reporting regulations.
The Dean is responsible for providing strategic intellectual leadership and for working effectively with faculty, staff, collective bargaining units, and other stakeholders on the School’s positioning and operations, including all program and personnel activities. The Dean serves as a member of the Dean’s Council and the Provost’s Academic Affairs Council.
The Dean’s office includes an Assistant Dean and administrative staff. The Dean also oversees the Elizabeth Elmore Center for Economic Development and Financial Literacy and partners closely with the Stockton Center on Community Engagement and Service-Learning. The new Dean of Education takes office with a general charge to support and advance the continued excellence of the School. Benefiting from a dedicated and passionate faculty, the Dean will provide vision and creative guidance to the School to assure that it maintains its ongoing strengths. At the same time, the Dean must provide transparent and authentic leadership, rooted in a deep and abiding appreciation for lifelong learning and a desire to serve students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of licensure/certification/accredited programs and processes including those of both State and Federal government
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership to further a shared strategic vision
- Proven ability to secure external programmatic funding and/or history of establishing internal and external partnerships that benefit the institution, student learning and the community
- Excellent people management skills and community building experience, including the abilities to inspire innovation and bring people together to work toward a common goal, leading with transparency and authenticity
- Strong written, oral, interpersonal and fiscal management skills
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in education or related field
- A minimum of three (3) years of significant and varied academic leadership experience closely related to areas of Deans’ responsibilities
- Eligible for appointment as Full Professor
Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of a successful record of programmatic assessment or accreditation experience
- Scholarly background and/or interdisciplinary research in Education, Human Development, Instructional Technology, or Leadership
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including proven success in promoting a positive, inclusive and collaborative teaching and learning environment
- Demonstrated success supporting a teacher-scholar model of faculty development
- Understanding and appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education in an interdisciplinary environment
- Demonstrated success supporting a school or other similarly-sized academic unit with a commitment to shared governance, open communication, and collaboration in a unionized environment
- Track record of leadership in support of student-success
