The Port of Oakland is currently recruiting for the position of Fire Prevention Systems Engineer. Under supervision, a Fire Prevention Systems Engineer performs journey level work inspecting, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of fire suppression and alarm systems including fire extinguishers, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm control panels, hydrants, hoses, hose reels, standpipes, fire pumps, flow alarm systems, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, (CO2, Halon, etc.) used in Port buildings and facilities. 

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs annual (or more frequent) fire inspections on all Port buildings, including inspecting sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, fire safety (exit doors, lights, emergency lighting, electrical or plumbing violations); notes discrepancies identified for correction by Port or tenant; follows up by revisiting the sites to verify that corrections have been made.
  • Trouble shoots, diagnoses and corrects system malfunctions; studies fire protection systems with problems to determine reasons for failure; makes minor changes and modifications of firefighting equipment; assists in recommending major modification projects.
  • Completes preventive maintenance (P.M.) routines; provides input in correcting P.M. routines to reflect code and field changes; recommends new P.M. routines.
  • Maintains current knowledge of building and fire codes.
  • Performs flow and residual pressure tests of hydrants and sprinklers; replaces damaged or inoperable heads; tests alarm systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This examination is open to persons who have a combination of education and experience that would reflect possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. A typical combination would include the following:

Education:  Graduation from high school.

Experience:  Four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of various systems in modern large public buildings and similar facilities, at least two years of which must be fire prevention and suppression equipment and systems.

Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver’s license at the time and for the duration of appointment.

Additional Requirements: Must be available for on-call duty as required for emergency situations or as required for uninterrupted operations.

The Port of Oakland requires each incumbent to successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check, which will include a fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA), prior to being considered for this position. This status must be maintained for employment at the Port.

If a position in this classification is assigned to the harbor work location, the Department of Homeland Security requires all employees to be in possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). This status must also be maintained for the duration of employment at the Harbor.

Must obtain a Fire Extinguisher Certificate of Registration issued by the California State Fire Marshall by the end of the probationary period and maintain it for the duration of appointment.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Knowledge of the basic principles of the operation, maintenance and repair of fire prevention systems; codes, regulations and practices applicable to fire suppression and alarm systems in Port buildings and facilities; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions. Ability to interpret and work from plans, specifications and manuals; comprehend and work from oral and written instructions; quickly learn new tasks/duties including those related to specialized and new equipment systems as they are installed and to help train co-workers.
