Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Lead Custodial Worker (1st Shift).

Working supervisor who is responsible for planning and assignment of work for assigned custodial staff and full range of custodial duties related to the cleaning and maintenance of building and facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Plan, review, assign, and monitor the work of assigned custodial staff.
  • Train new staff members in the appropriate methods of cleaning duties, appropriate use and application of chemicals and cleaning solvent, equipment, and established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and/or setup and arrange furniture and equipment for classes and scheduled events.
  • Maintain custodial materials and supplies; receive and distribute materials and supplies as needed.
  • Maintain and account for custodial equipment and materials.
  • Inspect building and facilities to assure appropriate maintenance, safety, and cleanliness standards are maintained. Report safety hazards and identify and report maintenance needs in assigned building and facilities.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports when directed.
  • Perform general cleaning of classrooms, offices, conference rooms, laboratories, dining rooms, gymnasium, auditorium, locker rooms, libraries, and all related areas.
  • Clean restroom facilities and related fixtures and restock supplies.
  • Perform general cleaning of windows, walls, doors, stairs, desks, chairs, tables, blackboards, and related furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean, sweep, vacuum, extract, mop, strip, wax, polish, buff, and maintain floors, steps, entrances, and halls.
  • Dispose of trash, biohazards, and recyclables properly.
  • Sweep and clean entranceways and steps.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Apply approved pesticides in place-approved traps for general pest control. Monitor and service as required.
  • Work safely with vehicles, equipment, cleaning fluids, chemicals, and other cleaning agents.
  • Assist in snow removal from building entrances and adjacent walkways.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial cleaning required.
  • The ability to organize, lead, and review the work of the custodial staff required.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbal and written instructions required.
  • The ability to prepare and maintain records and reports required.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information obtained during course of work required.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Two years’ experience in industrial or commercial cleaning preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
