Job Summary

The Multimedia Technician role is a part of the Science Center office (previously known as the Prep Room) that facilitates successful teaching and learning activities and events held in the Science Center building. They will need to perform and supervise complex technical workflow to support pedagogical events in classrooms and lecture halls. This includes set-up, operating, and supervising multimedia equipment use and care. This person also needs to train faculty, staff, and others to ensure a high-quality teaching and learning experience. 

This role is an integral part of the broader Education Support Services (ESS) team, but a vital part of the smaller set of technicians dedicated to the Science Center. This staff member must be a solid and reliable technician, but also someone who can communicate effectively with the broader Harvard community. This team works hand-in-hand with faculty, teaching fellows, and students. Customer service and communication skills must complement the technical abilities of this team. 

Position Description

The Multimedia Technician:

  • Operates audio/video/data and additional projectors, classroom computers, assistive listening devices, Crestron operating and e-control systems, matrix and routing switchers, image capture and annotation presentation technology, live streaming, a range of portable media equipment, video and audio recording systems, and sound reinforcement. 
  • Prepares and schedules lecture capture and other recordings within the Science Center; participates in post-production in conjunction with the Digital Media Specialist as required to support the needs of faculty, students, and staff. 
  • Trains and assists faculty, staff, and others in setting up and operating lecture hall multimedia equipment. 
  • In collaboration with team members, produces support documentation, including planning and protocol for staff, faculty, and students. 
  • Assists the broader ESS team in providing services for courses and events. Specifically coordinates the use of multimedia technology with the lecture demonstration staff for in-class experiments. 
  • Helps to maintain multimedia equipment; in cooperation with the operations supervisor, diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software. 
  • Liaises with ESS events coordinator to plan and support non-course events in the Science Center. 
  • Work with the operations supervisor to staff and support events. 

Basic Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent technical school
  • At least six months of experience with, audio, video, and/or multimedia technologies
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware, software, and audio/video signal flow 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Successful experience providing multimedia customer service in a fast-paced academic environment; 
  • Knowledge of ITIL methodologies; 
  • Proven ability to deliver professional customer service 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines 
  • Analytical and troubleshooting skills and the ability to identify and resolve technical process issues.  
  • Ability to work with a range of constituents and to develop solutions to service problems in a client-friendly manner; 
  • Knowledge of a range of computer software and operating systems 
  • Knowledge of streaming media platforms and basic video editing principles 
  • Familiarity with lavaliers, handheld mics, Shure wireless microphones, Panasonic and/or Black Magic HD video cameras, HD LCD projectors, Crestron/Extron integrated room control systems, and assistive listening systems preferred 
  • Strong customer service orientation  
  • Excellent communication skills 

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 25 pounds, climb ladders, and swiftly transport equipment across campus. 

Working Conditions

This position is based in Cambridge, MA.

Some evening and/or weekend shifts may be required.

Work Format Details

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
