Position Description

Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) in partnership with Office of Vice Provost for Research has expanded its Research Computing services to include a cloud-based Regulated Data Environment for research.  We are seeking candidates to provide direct consultation to faculty research groups on the best use of a wide set of cloud computing services including High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). This position will be responsible for supporting researchers in building their code and data pipeline needs, as well as demonstrating best practices in managing and building containers, software repositories/libraries, and computational workflow management.  This position will work directly within University Research Computing & Data and regularly work with Technical Partner Services within HUIT.

Typical Core Duties:

  • Advise a wide range of researchers through support requests (i.e. email, ticketing systems, chats) and in person consultations during office hours 
  • Compile and maintain up do date users-facing and internal technical documentation 
  • Build
    • advanced curriculum and teach workshops for researchers to maximize their use of RC 
    • test and deploy scientific software on the GPU computing system (on-prem HPC and cloud)     
    • deep understanding with specific research activities through regular engagements 
  • Facilitate the design, debugging, and automating/scripting of complex research workflows alongside researchers 
  • Connect and coordinate interactions between researchers and technology providers 
  • Provide regular communications to systems and software/data professionals 
  • Enhance learning with full awareness of the local and larger research computing and data landscape 
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Linux system administration 
  • Fluent in cloud computing infrastructure (VMs, containers, storage, databases, networks) conceptually across various platform providers 
  • Experience
    • deploying and managing containers (Docker, Appcontainer/Singularity) and repositories (git) and software distributions (CRAN/R, python/conda, Spack)  
    • in user support best practices (Trusted Advisor, Service Mindset, …) 
  • Ability to support or quickly learn AI/ML workflows 
  • Familiarity with information security best practices

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to type, sit or stand (based on preference) for the duration of the workday.

  • Work is performed in an office setting
  • Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours and may be contacted during off hours

HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. This position has been designated as a Remote position. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
